Whisky

Some word from the author

One of my passions is whisky that is the reason I'm doing this page. And I only really care about malt (preferably single malt) whisky. You are more than welcome to write to me about your own whisky experience. But don't bother to talk about blended whisky.

Whisky/Whiskey

Actually both spellings are correct. How come there are two spellings of the same thing you might ask. Well that is one of the strange thing about British English and American English. Normally characters are withdrawn from the word in American English but not in this case. Whiskey is the American English spelling and it is mainly referring to American/Canadian whiskey. And Whisky is the British English and it's mainly referring to Scottish/Irish/Welsh whisky. But sometimes Whisky/Whiskey is used for any countries Whisky/Whiskey. Neither is actually wrong..
But when I'm talking about Whisky I'm referring to the European variant (the original thing ;) ) and Whiskey for the non European variant.
That means American/Canadian and Japanese.. Yes they even distill whiskey in Japan. They have a couple of brands not many but couple. They are mainly blended, but they have some malts though. I haven't had the privilege to test Japanese whiskey but I would like to. What I have read about them is that they are very like the Scottish whisky with very little Japanese influence in them. But if you taste really carefully you will notice that there is some difference from the Scottish whisky. This is what I have heard and read and I would like to try one day but I can't get hold of any Japanese Whiskey here in Sweden.

Tested single malts

During my time as a Whisky drinker I have tested a couple of single malts. And so I will continue to do. I'm will try to write down the malts I have tested and keep this updated in this section of these pages. I will put my own thoughts about the spirit and I will also write down information that I have found from different resources. One of my two main sources are a Swedish book called "All Världens WHISKY" (All worlds WHISKY in English). It is released by Wahlströms. The Original Title is "Les Whiskies du Monde" written by Gilbert Delos. The Swedish translation of this book has the ISBN 91-32-32154-6 if your interested in getting this excellent book. I which I could help with the ISBN of a English translation or the original language version. If someone knows please mail me.
The second source actually are a software database that is really good. The software can be bought over the internet from the developer Uniqum System or from Whisky Web. Uniqum System is a Swedish company that has develop this software called Whisky '98. They have recently changed the name of this software to The Whisky Pilot but what I have gotten to understand it is the same thing but just another name for it. The tasting notes in Whisky '98 (The Whisky Pilot)comes mainly from the distillery and from Blackadder.

Bunnahabhain

Own Notes :

A good tasting scotch. A light nose. A soft body with a smooth and little oily after taste that lasts. It isn't that peaty and smoky as many other whisky from this region. But it still has the character of a Islay with it's sea salty taste.

Facts :

Age : 12 Country : Scotland
Distilled : Region : Islay
Bottled :  Type : Single Islay
Strength : 40 Cask : sherry and bourbon
Distillery : Bunnahabhain Distillery

Distillery tasting Notes :

A very dark colour with a light to medium body.

Blackadder tasting Notes :

Straw colour with golden highlights with a distinct quite light and flowery nose. The flavour is smoother, softer and less pungent than other islays. With a smooth, round, lovely and long finish.

Other :

In Les Whiskies du monde they are saying that "Whisky from Bunnahabhain separates itself from the other Islay whiskey, even though it has has flavour of the salty sea air. But don't use that much of peat during the malting and the distiller is very big and onion shaped."

Distillery notes :

Orange gold coloured. A aromatic nose with a smoky and dry palate flavour. Full body.

A pale straw with pale yellow depths colour. The nose is pleasantly peaty, dryish and with a hint of smokiness. It has a well balanced and almost dry flavour with a long, distinguished and lightly smoky finish.
